This volunteer program recruits senior citizens who enjoy working with children. Grandparent volunteers must meet income eligibility guidelines and pass background checks. Each accepted grandparent is assigned to an FGP site location in CAGI’s service area where they work one-on-one with at-risk and special needs children. Sites include public schools, day care centers, shelters, hospitals and guardian homes.
Volunteers receive a small federal stipend, transportation cost reimbursement, paid sick and vacation leave, a daily lunch and countless hours of satisfaction from their labors of love.
The students, typically ranging in age from pre-school to grade 6, are given academic assistance under the direction of teachers, day care administrators, and also are provided with training and development of social skills. The FGP director and volunteers assess each student’s initial level of academic and social development, and devise a plan complete with goals and objectives to help increase the student’s capabilities in those areas.
