Energy Assistance Program (EAP)

Para los requisitos en español, lea por favor este documento.

CAGI’s Energy Assistance Program heating season begins application intake on Tuesday, November 1, 2011.  Applicants may call the appointment line at 317-524-6966 beginning October 3, 2011 to schedule an appointment on or after November 1.  Please note that the initial call volume is very high in the first few weeks, so you may need to be persistent to get through.

You can avoid any delay in the appointment line by using the Energy Assistance Application Packet available from this website (click on Applications on the menu or go to www.cagi-in.org/Applications and click on “Get Energy Assistance Application Packet” to download or print), completing the application materials and providing the required documentation, and either mailing or hand-delivering the application packet to the appropriate CAGI site.

Energy Assistance Coordinator: Francine Robertson-White

The Energy Assistance Program offers financial assistance to low-income families who qualify and demonstrate a need for help in covering their energy expenses. The program is designed to help defray heating costs during the winter and cooling costs during the summer. The summer program also provides air conditioners for those who obtain a medical statement verifying necessity. Bulk fuel tanks are filled during the summer off-peak period to prepare clients for the winter months. Participants in EAP programs must meet federal and state guidelines in order to qualify for assistance.

The largest CAGI program both in budgeted dollars and clients served, each year more than 40,000 client households receive Energy Assistance. The assistance usually comes in the form of a credit provided to the eligible client on their gas or electric bill. Payments are directed to the utility vendors/fuel providers on behalf of participants.

EAP also offers energy education instruction to the clients who receive the heating and/or cooling benefit. Participants in the energy education component learn energy conservation tools and methods which, if used and practiced, should lower their energy bills and reduce their need for ongoing assistance.

EAP application/intake services are provided at all five CAGI office locations, as well as through the auspices of several partners (including township trustees, community centers and other social service agencies). See the EAP Intake Site List.

The EAP funding stream also provides most of the dollars supporting CAGI’s Family Development Services and case management efforts.
