Holiday Meal Program

PROGRAM HISTORY:  Community Action of Greater Indianapolis (CAGI) has provided holiday meals for families in CAGI’s four county service area for the past 16 years.  The CAGI Holiday Meal Program has grown from serving approximately 150 families in 1996 to 1,600 families in 2012.  Initially, community partners referred families to the program the first few years.  From 2008 to 2013, nearly 85% of recipients were randomly selected from CAGI Energy Assistance (EAP) database.  Special consideration was given to seniors and low-income disabled individuals.

In recent years, Marsh Supermarket and Gleaners Food Bank partnered with CAGI to provide food boxes at a reduced rate.  Over the years, CAGI has partnered with Kroger Company to provide holiday gift certificates to recipients to shop for food on their own.  CAGI Board of Directors, staff, clients and community partners have supported the program with contributions and volunteer hours over the years.

PROGRAM GOAL:  CAGI’s Holiday Meal Program goal is to serve our community’s most venerable families who face economic challenges of providing their family with food for the holiday in December.  Due to a decrease in funding, the program was not administered in 2014.

Geographic Area Served:  Marion (until 2013), Hamilton, Hendricks and Boone Counties

Clients Served in Prior Years

The main focus for the 2015 Holiday Meal Program was to partner with Gleaners Food Bank and sponsor mobile food pantries for four of our senior communities.

The mobile pantries were to go to each location, and allow the low-income Senior Communities to select their own food items. The purpose was to give low-income seniors and their family a selection of various dry goods, canned goods, fresh vegetables, dairy, and meat items to satisfy their holiday and dietary needs. At each distribution we served two communities combined.

CAGI also recognizes the growing homeless population, so we also reached out to several homeless shelters to sponsor their holiday meal. We allowed them to create a menu, and CAGI purchased all of the food items along with some toiletries, and personal hygiene items. CAGI also received a donation of approximately 50 women’s undergarments which was donated to FGSLTW Family shelter.
